Microcord is an unofficial Android client for Discord. It is a reconstruction of Discord's classic Android app (version 126.21) in Kotlin, keeping the old native interface while adding support for newer Discord features.

Motivation

Discord's current Android app is built with React Native, and many users find it slower and heavier than the older native app. Microcord aims to:

  • bring back the native interface of the classic app
  • launch very fast and stay responsive, even on older phones
  • keep up with modern Discord, so users don't have to give up newer features
  • let users customize the app and extend it with plugins

Performance

Microcord is currently faster than the original 126.21 app it is based on:

  • native Android views instead of a JavaScript interface
  • very fast launch times, helped by precompiled startup code (baseline profiles)
  • smaller per-architecture downloads

History

Development started in July 2026 by mantikafasi. The project is in early development, so builds may contain bugs.

Features

Microcord has feature parity with Discord 126.21. On top of that it has:

  • backported modern features such as polls, forwarding, media mosaics and modern profiles
  • bot buttons, modals and slash commands
  • voice and video calls with screen sharing
  • themes and customization options
  • developer options such as View Raw
  • a built-in updater with changelogs

Plugins

Plugins are separate Android apps that Microcord loads at runtime.

  • Official plugins include Message Logger, ReviewDB and Translate.
  • Plugins are installed and updated from the built-in plugin browser.
  • Developers can start from a public plugin template on GitHub, and the plugin SDK can be downloaded without an account.

Availability

  • Requires Android 6.0 or newer.
  • Installs alongside the official Discord app.
  • Released as APK files, with self-updating built in.
  • Source code is hosted on a self-hosted Git server, with a source-only mirror on GitHub.
